AN EYE FOR ELEGANCE. CARRIE MARCUS NEIMAN

December 3, 2021 - January 28, 2022

Opening Reception December 2, 2021

The Most Visited Exhibition In SMU’s History!

An Eye for Elegance, explores the life and legacy of Carrie Marcus Neiman, a child of German Jewish immigrants who, along with her brother Herbert and her husband A.L. Neiman, co-founded the iconic luxury speciality store Neiman Marcus in 1907. Carrie’s magical ability to predict fashion trends and her unparalleled sense of style, along with her commitment to customer service, helped set a standard for retail excellence that is unsurpassed.

The exhibition traces Carrie’s life from founding “The Store” when she was a young woman, through the Texas boom years of the 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s, to her election as Chairman of the Board in 1951, to her unexpected death in 1953. Carrie Marcus Neiman’s life is illustrated through photographs, historical documents, personal correspondence, exquisite gowns, and other artifacts that tell the story of a woman who was ahead of her time and often overlooked.

This exhibition is made possible in part by Neiman Marcus, and by the Eugene McDermott Foundation.
